Happy Friday Jr.! And now for a public service announcement:
This is one of a set of stickers I’m working on; let me know if this sort of thing interests you.
Worth Your Time
All Things Must Pass by George Harrison
This past week, I traveled to Friar Park via George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass. I listened to this in my twenties and got bored; I am now appalled by that and connect it to a lack of maturity on my part. Harrison wrote from the heart about The Beatles falling apart in a way that is universal, from a powerful “we” perspective. “Run of the Mill” hits especially hard for that reason. He managed to write about his own experience while touching on something that can easily speak to the listener’s own life. The horn arrangements and the complexity of the composition kept me coming back all week.
On Letters
Did you know that the visual design of a typeface cannot be copyrighted in the US? Font artists can protect their work through software rights, but if you’re creating letterforms by hand, which I do, it opens up a lot of options.
The Gorilla sticker I shared at the beginning and the title design for Treasure Blitz above (the “BLITZ” part) were both derived from the designs of Katsumi Tsuji, from the 1934 book titled A Compilation of Contemporary Letter Designs:
I picked up a copy of this book at Floating World Comics years ago and still get occasional inspiration from it. The Kanji section is even more impressive; Tsuji made an incredible body of work.
Also, in case you missed it last year, my comic Treasure Blitz is available on Pixiv. I’ll have some new comics to share soon; hope this satisfies you until then.
Until next time,
Zach
